Professor Kin Keung Lai

Professor Lai received his PhD at Michigan State University, USA. He is currently the Chair Professor of Management Science at the City University of Hong Kong. Prior to his current post, he was a Senior Operational Research Analyst for Cathay Pacific Airways and an Area Manager on Marketing Information Systems for Union Carbide Eastern.

Professor Lai has actively engaged in management consultant projects for corporations and organizations in Hong Kong and China, on sales forecasting, manpower scheduling, material flow planning, marketing research, inventory control and investment appraisals. Companies include Eveready Battery Products Ltd., Baring International Investment Management, Anderson Man Investment Consultants, Hong Kong Bank, Cafe De Coral, JWL Real Estate Investment Consultants, Hugo Printings, Hong Kong International Terminals, Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd., Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital, Hefei Fork Lift Truck of China and Vitasoy International Holdings etc.

Professor Lai’s main areas of research interests are operations and supply chain management, financial and business risk analysis and modeling using computational intelligence. He has extensively published in international refereed journals on the above areas. He is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Computational Science, International Journal of Optimization: Theory, Methods and Applications and International Journal of Operations Research.  He is also on the editorial board for the International Abstracts in Operations Research, Journal of Operational Research and Management Science of China, Journal of Management of China, Journal of System Engineering of China, International Journal of Operations and Quantitative Management, International Journal of Manufacturing Technology and Management, International Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management and International Journal of Simulation Modelling.

Professor Lai is the member of the International Advisory Committee of the Journal of Operational Research Society of UK, Council of International Federation of Operational Research Societies, Council of Association of Asian Pacific Operations Research Societies, Council of the Asia Pacific Industrial Engineering and Management Society, Council of Chinese Society of System Engineering, and Council of Chinese Society of Decision Sciences. He is the Founding Chairman of the Operational Research Society of Hong Kong which was established in 1979. Currently he is also the President of the Asia Association on Risk and Crises Management.

Professor Lai was the Dean of the College of Business Administration, Hunan University, China. He is currently the Adjunct Professor of the School of Management, Key Laboratory of Management, Decision and Information Systems, and Institute of System Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing; Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan and North China Electric Power University, Beijing.

In 2009, Professor Lai is the recipient of the Joon S. Moon Distinguished International Alumni Award of the Michigan State University and also appointed as the Chang Jiang Scholar Chair Professor by the Ministry of Education, China.
